The body of hiker Eugene Kumm was flown from the mountainside above Forest Falls on Sunday morning, more than two weeks after the Seal Beach man went missing. Search and rescue personnel found the 25-year-old's body about 1:30 p.m. Saturday near the 8,000-foot level, off of Vivian Creek Trail, said San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Cindy Beavers. Beavers did not know the condition of the body. She said Kumm was found about 300 feet below a ledge. An autopsy will determine the cause and time of death, she said. Workers had to wait for daylight Sunday to remove the body, Beavers said. A helicopter carried the body off of the mountain about 9 a.m., she said. Kumm, described as a moderately experienced and well-equipped hiker, began his journey Jan. 16 along Vivian Creek Trail. Other hikers reported seeing Kumm on Jan. 18 above High Creek, headed toward the summit. High Creek is 9,400 feet above sea level, about 2,100 feet shy of the summit of Mount San Gorgonio. Kumm is the sixth hiker to die in the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains since Jan. 1. |
